At some point, I retreated to the darkness of my bedroom, ready to catch some sleep. The house had been silent ever since JuJu spoke with her father. I knew she was worried about her brother. I wish there was a way for me to erase the pain she was feeling. I would carry it all if it meant she got to be her free-spirited self. She didn’t even stir when I told her dinner was done. I packaged her food and stored it in the fridge in case she got hungry during the middle of the night.

“Can I sleep with you?” Her soft voice floated through the darkness. Like a light, my eyes found her instantly with the help of the moonlight. She stood by the door, twisting her body from side to side.

I sat up slowly wiping my eyes to clear them of residue. Her request caught me off guard and I wasn’t sure what to say. “It’s just, today was a lot, and I can’t sleep because honestly, I don’t want to be alone.”

While I knew I had no obligation to comfort her, the strings of my heart yanked and pulled on my willpower, trying to wear me down. When I took too long to respond, she said, “You know what? It’s okay. That was crazy of me to even request.” She turned to leave and suddenly it felt like a sin to keep my mouth closed.

“Nah, it’s cool. You can stay.” I leaned to the side to turn on the bedside lamp. My eyes tracked her stride across the room. She wore a loose oversized band t-shirt that hung to her knees. A bonnet was strapped to her head, securing her curls in place. I even noticed that sheen of lip gloss on her lips. When she pulled the sheets back to climb next to me something in my soul leaped for joy. I averted my gaze, attempting to fight that feeling but her sweet scent garnered my attention right back to her presence beside me.

A genuine smile spread across her face. “Thank you,” she whispered.

I nodded. “It’s no problem. Get some sleep, lil mama.” I paused, then assured her, “Nothing will happen to you when you’re with me. I got you.” I watched stress, worry, and anxiety leave her body with a drop of her shoulders and a soft sigh.

“Okay, well goodnight.” She lifted the covers over her legs, then snuggled deeper into the bed. I lay against the headboard, watching her for a while.

“Goodnight,” I finally responded before casting us into a room of blackness. Yet and still, she glowed beside me like the brightest white light.

“Sedai.” My name hung in the silence.

I gulped, feeling like whatever came next would alter the trajectory of our relationship. Being so close to her was hard as it is. “Yes?” I finally mustered the strength to answer her.

She shifted beside me until she was on her side facing me. I turned on my side doing the same. She inched closer until our noses were touching.
